    TREE DRAWINGS

    INSTALLATION / PERFORMANCE:

This project maps the essence of people through the drawing of trees. In psychoanalysis, there is a method that makes people draw a tree and then uses that drawing to determine a persons personality. This project is a critique of that process, but also embraces the beauty of each persons individuality.

    This project has two parts:-

    1. MAPPING

The collection of tree drawings made by people using standardized paper, ink and rule set. Thus the only changing variable is the form of the trees. This is a work in progress, but a sample of 50 trees is viewable here. By using an object (the tree) that is extremely familiar to people is it possible to gather an essence of their personalities? I don't think so, but its an interesting experiment to see how this question is addressed.

In front of the wall of trees there are two chairs placed.....

    2. SONIFICATION AND PERFORMANCE

The second part of this project was to transfer the form drawn by people on paper into a sonic representation. In order to do this the images were scanned into processing (the programming platform) to track the form of the trees. This information was then sent over to the Max/MSP/Jitter application where it was used to create sound. The way i did this was by converting each form to one sound as the next tree entered the stage (screen) the earlier form would begin to morh into the next one. Thus creating a time based sound piece. The code and other details can be found in the drop down menu on the right.
