    ABOUT
Flicker Forever is a proposal for an installation in a controlled environment and explores the issue of light pollution through a narrative based approach. The installation takes place after the time when the world has been destroyed by a mythological firefly called photinus. This firefly has been given special powers to destroy all the light on earth by the moon and thus the reference to the moon in th ebackground.   The piece is informed from a short story written by Chetan .  The main protagonist in this piece is called Photinus, which is a reference to the binomial nomenclature of fire flies. In order to understand the evolution of the piece it is important to read the story since it informs the entire installation. The animation displayed on the screen embedded in front of the sculpture is the creation myth of photinus as well as his demise.

Photinus was at one time a firefly until it was made into a super firefly by the moon. The non human world was tired of the excess light pollution and the fireflies were especially upset since they were unable to mate (fireflies need darkness to attract other flies with their glow). And so one day the moon who was also tired of the excess light decided to give one little firefly the power to destroy all the light on earth in order to save his species. This was when photinus was born. Photinus is a self powered object and it does this through solar energy, which is similar to the way bioluminescent creatures work. This project was also documented by chetan as an example of creating transparency in the production of an art project for Natalie Jerimijenko’s - How Stuff Is Made project.

    STORY
Many years ago there was a firefly called Jonah that was tired of not being able to find a companion. The excess lights in the east coast of America had made it hard for fireflies to glow and be visible to the opposite sex. On a lonely full moon night, Jonah decided to fly down to the east river and bask in the glorious moonlight. While it was sitting there it felt the moon was trying to communicate with Jonah because its lantern began to flicker unintentionally. Accepting this strange phenomenon Jonah let the moons voice enter its mind. The moon was telling Jonah that it had a special mission for it. A mission that would save its entire species from extinction. Jonah listened with eager interest, but quickly realized that taking on this task would involve an ultimate sacrifice. A deep fear suddenly set in and Jonah closed itself to the moons communication. Later it flew around the countryside trying to find other fireflies, but only found lonely males sitting by themselves under leaves and moist damp rocks. At the end of this flight Jonah knew what his purpose in this lifetime was. He flew back to the same place on the east river where he was earlier in the night. The moon greeted Jonah and asked him if he was ready. Jonah agreed with a blink of his lantern After the moon had chosen the appropriate solar flare to deflect towards Jonah it said a short chant that would act as the catalyst. The solar flare approached the moon and smashed into it with great intensity, but was immediately deflected towards earth. Jonah felt his back heating up and was soon struck with an intense energy. Jonah's soul left his body flying high above earth and towards the moon. When Jonah looked back towards earth it saw that his little firefly body had been replaced by a large black wavy object. Jonah flew around to see it from the front when suddenly there was a massive explosion. A wave of energy erupted from this object and spread across the land, turning off the lights that met its path and laying the entire city to sleep in complete complete darkness. After a few days the fireflies started to reappear from their lonely hideouts and the entire coast was flooded with little blinking lights. As the years went by Photinus’s skeleton lay there and the city rebuilt itself. The lights turned back on and man continued to thrive and exploit. Until, one day the oceans and the moon got together and finally delivered a giant wave of water that flooded the entire eastern coast. When the water subsided there was only one flicker still alive. That flicker was from the body of Photinus.
